The Front Door to Your Home

One of my favorite things to do is drive through neighborhoods and snap pics of houses, especially front doors. So, while on vacation in southern California last week, Michael was so sweet to drive real slow through this New Port Beach neighborhood while I snapped away.

Having a design and decorators heart I know first impressions are generally the ones that stick. I'm not out to impress, but what I do want is to communicate who I am and what I love in those beauty spots and soft feminine touches outside my home as well as inside.

The walk way that leads to our front door communicates something and often times it's what's neglected while we're so busy 'creating sanctuary' on the inside.

During this season where we bring those fall touches into our home, why not have your starting point be your front entrance way? What kind of fall touches can you add that will communicate a warm welcome? Can you add a pot of mums in one of those gentle burgundy tones? How about replacing your front door mat and adding a fall wreathe to your door, like the one below? I admit, I'm a bit of a slacker right now, but intend to take a welcome to my home inventory this weekend to see what I can do.

Of all the homes we drove by, it was THIS home that said, Lylah. I'm crazy about French doors, because, to me, they extend what's inside the home to the out and what's outside to the in. I also love the simplicity of white and don't you love those two wreathes?

What do you think this front entrance says?

Part of this whole neighborhood communicated, "We're about getting to know you and each other and love to live outside - in the front." I love that - community! Very back east culture and I loved seeing it in sunny California.

Love these black double doors and the brick that leads up to such a grand entrance. The one big clay pot with those fall touches seems just enough to me.

While in Spain last July, I snapped away at front doors in a San Sebastian neighborhood which you can see here.
